Welcome to Thamesmead African Film Club

Did you know that Thamesmead has the highest proportion of Black Africans in both London and the UK?

Did you know that African cinema is still hugely underrepresented in the UK’s cultural scene?

We created the Thamesmead African Film Club to help change that — right here, in one of the most culturally rich but underserved areas of the capital.

Each month, we bring short and feature-length films from across the African continent to screens in Thamesmead. These films explore urgent and powerful themes — including migration, gender and sexuality, climate change, magical realism, disability, and women's voices in African cinema.

After each screening, we host open, informal discussions — because cinema should spark conversation, not just silence.

This project is about more than film. It’s about:

  • Reconnecting African and diaspora communities with their cultural heritage

  • Giving space to stories rarely shown in mainstream cinemas

  • Encouraging learning, conversation, and cross-cultural understanding

  • Building stronger local bonds through shared experience

Whether you’re from the African diaspora, new to African cinema, or simply love thought-provoking film — this club is for you.

We invite you to join us in bringing Africa’s many voices to life on screen, right here in Thamesmead.
